Overview

What a root canal is

Inside each tooth is soft pulp made up of nerves and blood vessels. Root canal treatment removes infected, injured or dead pulp. The dentist cleans the root canal system, then fills and seals the canal.

At Sunset Dental Centre, root canal treatment on all teeth, from front teeth to molars, is done by Dr. Haytham Elfawal.

After a root canal, the tooth is restored with a filling or a crown. A back tooth will likely need a crown, because chewing puts a great deal of force on back teeth.

If a tooth cannot be saved, tooth extraction and replacement options can be discussed instead.

Who it may be for

When a root canal may be needed

Only an examination and x-rays can confirm whether a root canal is needed. It may be considered when:

  1. Bacteria have entered the tooth through a deep cavity, a crack or a flawed filling.

  2. A tooth has become abscessed, which may cause pain and/or swelling.

  3. Your dentist notices an infection on a dental x-ray.

How treatment is planned

How root canal treatment is planned

The number of visits depends on the tooth and your plan. Your dentist will explain the expected timing.

  1. The dentist examines the tooth and discusses your symptoms.

  2. X-rays help the dentist see the tooth and decide whether a root canal, another treatment or an extraction is appropriate.

  3. The dentist gives a local anesthetic (freezing), removes the pulp, cleans the root canal system, and fills and seals the canal.

  4. The tooth is restored with a permanent filling or a crown.
